Mr Harry Mount
‘What makes English buildings look English?’

Harry Mount, historian and linguist, came to address the History of Art Society on the topic of the Englishness of English Architecture.  With brilliant forensic skill he unpicked some of the contributing factors, such as England's climate and geography, her innate conservatism, the wide range of building materials, and the impact of frequent government legal interventions on buildings.  It was a very thought-provoking talk, and was warmly received by the audience of boys and staff in the Marten library.
