Supporters recognised at wall unveiling

Eton College’s most generous donors have been recognised within a new panel on the Novi Fundatores wall, in the heart of the school.

The hand-carved stone panel, which lists the names of some of Eton’s biggest supporters, was officially unveiled by the Provost, Lord Waldegrave of North Hill, during the recent St Andrew’s Day celebrations.

Names on the panel include the Old Etonian Association and the American Friends of Eton College, as well as a number of individuals, families and trusts.

Some of the supporters were able to attend the short ceremony and joined the morning of special activities which mark the school’s annual St Andrew’s Day event, including watching the traditional Wall Game.

Donors support a range of projects at Eton, including the provision of scholarships and bursaries allowing children from a broad range of backgrounds to attend the school. This academic year 274 boys (21% of the pupils) are receiving means-tested financial support, averaging 64% remission of school fees. Of those, 70 boys are currently on 100% means-tested bursaries.

Philanthropy is also needed to support the extensive college Collections, fund social projects run by the boys for the good of the wider community and assist with the upkeep of Eton’s 400 buildings, of which 78 are listed. Supporters also play a fundamental role in providing new buildings and facilities to enhance the boys’ educational development.

“The donations we receive make a tangible difference to the experience of every boy here,” said Rachael Henshilwood, Director of Development. “What’s heartening is hearing the reasons why our supporters give to us; they have a genuine enthusiasm and passion for the work taking place at Eton.

“We are extremely grateful for their support and are delighted to be able to recognise them on the Novi Fundatores wall.”
