COVID-19 has affected all aspects of society, but the lack of personal interaction has made it profoundly more difficult for charities to host fundraising events. The Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice is one such charity.

Harry Leeds and Adnan Aneez from WING ingeniously suggested that Timbrallites and their families run, walk, row, or cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats, a distance of 1407 km, to raise a minimum of £1407 for a week’s duration. They began their challenge on Easter weekend, determine to help the work of the hospice, which provides support for children with severe life-limiting conditions and their families in Berkshire and surrounding counties.

Due to the careful organisation and execution of the fundraising programme, WING collectively raised over three times their expected sum. Adnan explains, “I have learned that the human spirit is capable of rising above all challenges, coming together and making a difference and supporting each other, no matter what obstacles we face”.

Both Adnan and Harry expressed a sincere hope that such a venture will not only inspire others to be proactive and engage in social action, but allow them to “harness the inherent Etonian competitive spirit” and facilitate their own future fundraising efforts.

Adnan suggests that, “for anyone thinking of setting up something similar, the most important advice would be to keep it exciting”. Harry added that, “it would be good to have brainstorming sessions on Zoom so that the organisers can bounce off each other’s energy and come up with good ideas”.

We would like to congratulate both Harry and Adnan, and the WING community, on their incredible fundraising venture.
