Charlie Zhou (KS 2005-2010) has received an Elsevier Data Analytics Fulbright Award to enable him to study at Harvard University on one of the most well-regarded and impactful scholarship programmes in the world.

Charlie is an Academic Foundation Programme doctor at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. He undertook his pre-clinical training at the University of Cambridge before completing his medical degree at the University of Oxford. He is also the recipient of a National Sarcoma Awareness Fellowship.

As part of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar programme, the Scholar Awards provide the only scholarships available to academics and other professionals for lecturing and/or research in any discipline at any accredited US university. The Awards form part of the US-UK Fulbright Commission’s work to promote leadership, learning and empathy between nations through educational exchange.

The Commission selects scholars through a rigorous application and interview process, looking for academic excellence alongside a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to give back to the UK upon returning.

Commenting on receiving the Award, Charlie said: I am delighted to be able to participate in this fantastic opportunity. Not only will this award enable me to study under leading public health academics at Harvard University, I will also be able to participate in a cross-cultural exchange steeped in tradition. I hope to build upon the foundations of my clinical experience as a junior doctor to learn more about addressing health issues at the scale of the population.

Charlie and the other 46 British grantees of the 2018-19 Fulbright cohort will celebrate their success at a reception hosted by the US Embassy in June.
