Conservative Christian Fellowship

On Tuesday 30th October, the Simeon Society hosted David Burrowes, the Conservative MP for Enfield Southgate (2005-2017) and founder of the Conservative Christian Fellowship. He spoke on why Christians should not shy away from being involved in politics as some suggest but rather that they should make their voice heard as one which is trustworthy and principled in an often less than transparent environment. He pointed to the example in the Old Testament of Daniel who was the equivalent of prime minister to Darius, King of Persia before pointing to Christ as the perfect example of a servant. In response to questions, Mr Burrowes also talked about the pressure that he had faced when he spoke in the house on issues where his view differed to the majority opinion of parliament. He finally spent time explaining the inexorable link the British Parliament and the Church including the tradition of speaker’s prayers and the inscription in Central Lobby from Psalm 127, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.” It was an incredibly thought-provoking talk but also wonderfully reassuring for those there whose beliefs might not align with an increasingly secular society that God will always support those that speak for him as he did with Daniel.
