On Monday, 28th January, 2019, the first ever event of the newly formed Social Impact Society took place. Boys heard from Dan Jewison, a former English teacher who started his own volunteering company called Teach Gambia. Dan’s talk, titled Volunteering: The Facts and the Myths, detailed the positives and negatives of the volunteering industry. He highlighted the dangers of the ‘myth of doing good’ that many volunteering schemes try to sell, and encouraged boys to make informed decisions about any type of volunteering work they undertake. Dan specifically invited boys to think about how charities affect the local communities they work within, and to ask questions and do their research. Overall, it was a notable inaugural event for the Social Impact Society as it empowered boys interested in social action and outreach to think carefully about their future endeavours.
