To celebrate British Science Week, members of the Chemistry department visited a local middle school to deliver a talk about the chemical elements to year 8.

This talk showcased not only interesting forms of common metallic elements, but also featured more unusual or precious elements that the children were unlikely to come across in day to day life, such as uranium, osmium and technetium.

The children were able to handle some of the elements and the highlights for them seemed to be comparing the density of magnesium and aluminium, and seeing an unusually large piece of bismuth.

The talk was very well received, with many of the children crowding around at the end, even missing their break, to continue to talk about and view the samples.
