On Wednesday 27th February, Lord Michael Heseltine spoke to 130 people at the Political Society on the title of 'The Conservatives and Europe: a party divided.' As an experienced former Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister, he started by outlining how the importance of peaceful British-European relations began in 1945 with the end of the Second World War, and explained the necessity of a common European identity. Running through a chronological narrative, Lord Heseltine outlined the significance of the Conservative Party in these relations and explained their long-term role in provoking Euroscepticism and causing Brexit. Lord Heseltine concluded that it was the role for our generation to overcome the problems of a country mired by divisions, scapegoating and mistrust by Westminster.
