The Eton Choirbook

Eton College Chapel hosted a spectacular concert given by The Sixteen and Harry Christophers on Tuesday 22 May, which included music from the Eton Choirbook (Eton MS 178) and new works inspired by the Choirbook commissioned by the Genesis Foundation. The Chapel Choir also sang. The concert was preceded by a reception during which the Choirbook was displayed in the Library. The Choirbook also featured in the filming that afternoon of an interview between Harry Christophers and the composer Sir James MacMillan for The Sixteen’s 2019 Choral Pilgrimage, and was taken to the Chapel for display during the concert, which was streamed live on Classic FM – you can listen again here: http://www.classicfm.com/artists/sixteen/news/eton-college-facebook-live/

Browning Society

On Saturday 12 May College Library entertained the Browning Society. Thirty-five visitors enjoyed a display, curated by Michael Meredith, covering the main events in the lives of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, as well as their most important works. Eton owns the most comprehensive collection of the Brownings in Britain, and some of our visitors had travelled long distances to be here. The afternoon concluded with tea in the Charteris Rooms.

Visits from local schools

The Natural History Museum welcomed nearly fifty pupils from the Nursery and Reception classes at Eton Wick C of E First School this week. They each enjoyed a tour of the museum and a talk about life cycles from the Curator.

Also this week, twenty Year 2 children from Eton Porny School visited College Library’s ‘Voyages’ exhibition, where they shared some of their experiences of travelling, used a map to identify all the birds and beasts in the exhibition, learned about migrations, and admired a 19th-century version of a Kindle and the smallest book in College Library.
