On Wednesday 23rd January, Prof. David Runciman OE spoke to 70 people at the Political Society on the title of 'How democracy ends.' As an author and head of the Politics department at Cambridge University, he suggested that democratic systems were showing concerning and previously unseen symptoms such as volatility and fake news. Using social and political comparisons to past decades from history, he concluded that the 1890s provided a better similarity to the 2010s than the 1930s. In what was an entertaining talk, Prof. Runciman also offered radical, if provocative, ways to counter the current political turmoil mentioning the enfranchisement of children as young as six.
