Modern Languages Society: Nicholas Ostler on Endangered Languages

The Modern Languages Society was very lucky to host Dr Nicholas Ostler. Dr Ostler is an author, an academic, a leading authority on languages, speaker of twenty six languages and, amongst other prestigious positions, Chairman of the Foundation for Endangered Languages. He spoke about the defence of language diversity to a packed room of boys in Birley Schools, covering a wide range of topics from whether or not it is a good idea to enforce the learning of a national language (as Wales and Ireland have done) to  the many languages of the Aboriginals.  The meeting ended with some astute questions from boys and Dr Ostler kindly giving away free copies of some of his publications on endangered languages.
