1st XI Hockey:
Dr Challoner’s 3  Eton 3

Had Funnell’s last minute, deflected shot crept inside the left post, instead of inches wide, Eton would have celebrated a deserved victory in this pulsating match. Challoner’s are hockey specialists. They had won all of their previous matches by 3 goal margins and possess skilful club players, who will control a game if allowed space in which to operate. Eton’s primary aim was to nullify their playmakers and then pass quickly in possession. Challoner’s opening goal, which came against the grain, was immediately equalised by Funnell from mid-range. Eton began to exert control: Maxwell subdued the Challoner’s playmaker, Arwas and Senaratne won central ball and Innes, J.Lighton and Funnell transferred quickly to Taylor (enjoying his best game) and Nadeem. Loveridge slapped in a well-worked second goal before the otherwise impressive Buchan received a yellow card, reducing Eton to 10 players either side of half time.

Challoner’s used their numerical advantage to equalise. Again, Eton replied; this time through Nadeem, who was then sin-binned for raising an arm in the tackle. H.Lighton followed immediately for an identical offence, leaving Eton with 9 players. Innes turned an ankle, Senaratne was blood-binned and Eton’s remaining players defended valiantly, none more so than Ashcroft, but a third Challoner’s goal came with 4 minutes on the clock. Finally restored to a full complement, Eton dominated the close (with Challoner’s themselves reduced to 10 players) but the final finish eluded.
