Robert Bickers, Professor of History at Bristol University, gave a talk to the Oriental Society entitled ‘The Scramble for China: Foreign Devils in the Qing Empire, 1832-1914’. The talk essentially comprised of a whistle-stop tour through China’s 19th Century relations with imperialist powers, focusing more specifically on the case of Shanghai’s foreign concessions.  Professor Bickers's presentation offered a distinctly personal perspective, focusing on the impact of individuals such as Harry Parkes and Robert Hart, and providing a fascinating slant on the significance of cultural memory through his discussion of the monuments of the era.
