Hockey - Eton v Bradfield

1st XI Hockey:         Eton 1 Bradfield 2
Bradfield shaded this opening encounter on a penetratingly cold afternoon on New Masters. The Eton side contains 9 boys with first team experience from last year, yet the best patches of hockey came from the visitors, who transferred the ball quickly from left to right, broke at pace and produced two devastating finishes to win the match. Holden opened the scoring for Eton after 15 minutes, when the ball ran loose to him mid-circle, but a clinical deflection beat Hutchison immediately afterwards to level the score. An unchecked run and roofed finish from the Bradfield centre half made the score 1-2 at half-time.
Eton had possession and territory in the second half, but were channelled all too frequently down our left hand-side: the weak side in hockey. Nevertheless, Karslake, Nieboer and Shaw Stewart had presentable chances, which went unconverted. Either side could have registered a late goal as legs began to tire and gaps to appear, but Bradfield ran down the clock as the gloom descended; the home side knowing that a simple adherence to the basics would have reaped greater dividends.
