Last week, the Global Society were honoured to host the Australian High Commissioner to the UK, George Brandis.

Mr Brandis discussed how the unique relationship between the UK and Australia has developed over time, and now after Brexit, why a free trade agreement may succeed in bringing the two nations even closer together.

Providing insight into how Australia fought with the UK in multiple conflicts, to how some of the current political systems in Australia are based on long-standing British traditions, Mr Brandis emphasised the importance of the past, the present and the potential future in ensuring an even closer relationship.

After his fascinating talk, the room was opened up to questions, which varied from China’s influence in regard to Australia’s trading partners, to how Australia has one third of the world’s uranium at its disposal, yet has instead stuck to coal as its primary source of energy.

It was an insightful and hopeful talk and many thanks must go to the Provost and Lady Waldegrave for hosting.
