On Monday October 8th, Jeremey Burge – founder of Emojipedia and World Emoji Day – came to deliver a talk on everything Emoji.

He discussed some of the history behind emojis and their evolution from a little used keyboard in Japan to a global phenomenon today. We also heard about some of the issues surrounding emojis including their different meanings across separate devices and the specifics of how new ones are added.

We were also treated to some amusing stories about companies getting emojis wrong including Google’s recent mistake with the placement of cheese in their hamburger emoji. The talk was concluded by a Q&A which covered a wide range of topics including the day to day specifics of working in this industry.

It was an intriguing talk and we thoroughly thank the speaker for sharing his expertise with us.
