In celebration of World Environment Day 2020, the Environment Society hosted a student forum this week in the form of a Zoom webinar to hear views on this year’s theme, ‘Time for Nature’. World Environment Day aims to sustain a global conversation and facilitate change, recognising that ‘to care for ourselves, we must care for nature’.

Our student forum began with the introduction of the new Keeper of Environment Action who outlined his aims for the next academic year, primarily continuing block lectures, house talks by Environment reps, as well as reducing food waste at Eton.

Ideas were also generated by our Zoom participants, including continuing to develop the biodiversity projects across school, as well as further film screenings, open debates and prioritising fundraising for environmental charities. Each year, five charities are nominated to receive funds from Eton Action, and the forum was unanimous in its support for lobbying on behalf of an environmental charity to take one of these spots in the 2021-2022 fundraising cycle.

A number of boys also spoke about their Community Engagement projects, such as a vegetarian cookbook, and a group of Year 11 students who have been raising funds for a charity called Oceana, which campaigns for decreasing pollution in the world’s oceans. KLH closed the forum with a reminder of the multiple environmental themed online courses and internships which can be found online.

Eton’s Environment Society is hosting a week of events in celebration of World Environment Day, and you can access more information on the movement here. Events include a screening of The Story of Plastic, a brand-new film produced by the Break Free from Plastic movement which takes a sweeping look at the man-made crisis of plastic pollution, the worldwide effect it has on the health of the planet and the people who inhabit it, and the action being taken to stop it.
