This group is responsible for the educational experience of boys at Eton College.
Simon Henderson
Simon Henderson
Prior to joining Bradfield College, Simon was Deputy Head (Academic) at Sherborne School.
He already knew Eton well having taught history here for eight years from 2001. He was Head of History for four of those years.
Simon is a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching, a Trustee and former Vice-President (Europe) of the International Boys’ School Coalition and a governor of the London Academy of Excellence.
A graduate of Brasenose College, Oxford, Simon is married to Ali (who is the Chief Executive of Royal SpringBoard, a social mobility charity) and they have four children.
Paul Williams
Paul Williams
The Lower Master deputises for the Head Master in his absence and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the School.
Paul read Maths at Exeter College, Oxford and stayed on to complete a PGCE before coming to Eton in 1993. He was a House Master from 2010-22 having done a variety of roles including Head of E Block and Master-in-Charge of the Field Game. Until recently, he was a governor of a local state school in Slough, having previously been a governor of a boys’ boarding prep school.
He has four children and his three sons went to Eton. His wife, Becky, teaches at Lambrook School.
Jeanette Thorne
Jeanette Thorne
Jeanette oversees not only the curriculum and academic departments but also learning support and the Tony Little Centre for Innovation and Research in Learning (CIRL); in addition she has overall responsibility for examinations (both internal and external) and the process of application to university.
Jeanette arrived at Eton in 1995 after completing her PGCE at York University. During her time here she has developed and run our Induction and Teacher Training programmes for Masters, as well as being Director of Professional Development, Head of the Mathematics Department for five years, and Deputy Head (Curriculum Staff).
Jeanette has two daughters.
James Fulton
James Fulton
James oversees all Boarding Houses at Eton and works closely with House Masters and Dames, with a particular focus on providing high quality pastoral care through strong House teams.
James read History at Brasenose College, Oxford then served in The Rifles for 10 years. He arrived at Eton in 2009 and since then has taken on various roles including Head of History, Head of C Block and Master-in-Charge of the Field Game. For the last 8 years, he has been Master-in-College to the 70 King’s Scholars. He is a governor at two secondary schools: a local comprehensive and an independent school where he is also Chair of the Education Committee.
He is married to Melissa, a Maths teacher in a state school, and they have two children.
Mike Grenier
Mike Grenier
Mike oversees all our pastoral care for boys and so works closely with the Stephenson Centre for Wellbeing, the Health Centre, the Director of Safeguarding, the Director of SPHERE, the Director of Inclusion Education, the Head of Access, the Heads of Block as well as House Masters and Dames.
Mike studied English Literature at undergraduate level at the University of Oxford and has a PGDE from Edge Hill University. He was a House Master from 2004-17 in Wotton House and from 2019-21 in Evans’s House. His wife, Emma, is a physiotherapist, and they have a daughter and a son. He is currently a governor at two prep schools.
Jonathan Newton
Jonathan Newton
The Deputy Head (Co-Curriculum) oversees the extensive co-curriculum at Eton, including sport, music, drama, outdoor education, CCF, community engagement and the societies programme.
Jon is an English teacher who began his teaching career at Latymer Upper School in 1992 before moving to Eton in 2000, and becoming a House Master in 2009.
He has extensive knowledge of the co-curriculum having coached rugby, football and cricket teams, written and directed plays, edited the school magazine, run debating, and taken various trips abroad.
Jon’s wife, Lisa, is the Head of Economics at Westminster School and their two sons both attended Eton.
Tom Arbuthnott
Tom Arbuthnott
Tom oversees Eton’s strong and multiple relationships with state sector schools and the community engagement programme, as well as the annual summer schools.
Tom studied at both Oxford and Cambridge universities before becoming a teacher in 2004. From 2010-2016, Tom led an award-winning outreach programme at King Edward’s School, Birmingham.
An Old Etonian himself, he returned in 2016 as Eton’s first Director of Outreach and Partnership (and then Deputy Head).
In 2019, Tom oversaw the launch of the Thames Valley Learning Partnership, creating a foundation for collaborative and effective cross-sector relationships between local schools and students.
Alice Vicary-Stott
Alice Vicary-Stott
Alice takes specific responsibility for all safeguarding and child protection matters in the school.
She exercises her responsibilities in conjunction with four Deputy DSLs, who are currently the Deputy Head (Pastoral), the Safeguarding Co-Ordinator, the Head of D Block and the Director of SPHERE.
Alice has a degree in Social Work, and has worked in Children’s Social Care throughout her career in a variety of Social Care departments. Before joining Eton, Alice was the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) for Kingston, Richmond, Windsor and Maidenhead. In this role she was in charge of child protection services working closely with both maintained and independent schools, the police and other statutory agencies. Alice was also chair of the National LADO Network up until she took up her post at Eton.
