Athletics at Eton spreads over two halves.
The cross-country House Steeplechase races are held late in the Lent Half. Houses enter teams in each of the three age groups and boys also compete as individuals.
Some of our best cross-country runners compete against other schools at meetings in the Lent, and some have proceeded to represent Berkshire at the national championships.
The heats of the House Athletics Championships also take place in the Lent Half. A huge number of boys participate in these, each competing in up to three events.
In the Summer Half boys can opt to take Athletics as their major sport. The School has matches against other schools every week throughout the half, with up to eight teams competing against each other, and boys also take part in events such as the County Championships on an individual basis. The School competes at three age levels – Under 15 (F block), Under 17 (E and D), Under 20 (C and B) – and there is an A and B team at each level.
The School provides many Berkshire Champions, and each year several of these talented Etonians are invited to take part in the English Schools Championships. Some – most recently an 800m runner – achieve the quality of performance required to represent England at schoolboy level.
The state of athletics at Eton has undoubtedly been enhanced by the building of the Thames Valley Athletics Centre, an impressive £4M complex comprising an eight-lane track, throwing and jumping facilities, an indoor track, and indoor training facilities. Many international athletes have made the TVAC their base, and it is not unknown to see Eton boys using the track alongside some household names.
