Medical Society Dr Roger Foo, ‘The Cardiac Genome’
On Wednesday 5 October, Dr Roger Foo, a British Heart Foundation Fellow at Cambridge University, came to speak to the Medical Society. As an expert in cardiology, he addressed the subject of genetics in heart failure, with a particular focus on challenging current ideas regarding how we interpret the genome. He discussed how recent findings are shaking the world of genetics and how developments in our knowledge of the ways in which genes affect us could lead to improved therapies. It was shown that, since the beginning of the Human Genome Project, we have been taking major leaps forward into understanding our genes, illustrating how we may soon all be able to ‘carry our own genome in our pocket.’ The engaging talk attracted over 160 students, drawn from Eton and eight local schools.
