The Broadcasting Society was delighted to welcome Lord Grade to speak about ‘Press and Media Regulation’. With an unrivalled career in broadcasting, there couldn’t have been a better person to give their thoughts on this sensitive and topical issue. Lord Grade spoke of the importance of self-regulation within the media, and respect for the law, particularly with regard to the phone hacking scandal. He also advised those thinking about careers in the media, warning of how much passion and vigour is required in such a competitive industry. He spoke with great humour and honesty, and gave his view on issues including the role of Twitter, the license fee and the future of TV in an era of online catch-up services. An enthusiastic crowd of boys filled Election Hall to hear Lord Grade’s excellent talk.
