Eton are through to the national final of the Schools Mace
The Eton pair of Tommy Seagull (MGHM) and Harry Elliott KS have reached the national final of the Schools Mace. This is the most prestigious schools debating competition and the achievement puts Tommy and Harry in the top eight teams in the country.
Starting in December, Tommy and Harry won through local, area and regional rounds in a competition which involves about 400 schools up and down the country. Their achievement is particularly noteworthy as our region was changed from ‘Eastern’ to ‘Central’, pitting us against many of the London schools which usually go on to win the whole competition. Eton have won the Schools Mace twice, in 1964 and and 1965. Our return to form in the last couple of years (we have also reached the grand final in three one-day tournaments) has created quite a buzz on the debating circuit. This puts a very positive pressure on us to maintain the standard and, hopefully, get even better.
The national final will take place at Dartmouth House on Friday 30 March.
