Debating Society: This House would directly elect mayors for all UK cities

Friday, 21st September 2012

Four brave volunteers stepped up for the traditional impromptu debate, attempting to sell anything in the Upper School, in which the audience thankfully valued the Eton Debating Society marginally more than the Upper School itself. The organised debate was also strong, with some novices really stepping up to the plate and, in some cases, even outperforming our regulars. The audience seemed to be in favour of the motion, subjecting it to quite a barrage in the ‘points from the floor’ section (including, at one point, a mini-debate between George Clay ma OS ME (TEJN) and Ben Evans OS (PBS)), however by the end of the summary speeches they decisively voted down the motion.
