Eton College installed Paul Williams as the new Lower Master this weekend, in a service that took place in College Chapel.

He was joined by his family and members of the Eton community as he officially took his place in the role.

The Lower Master is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the School, and deputises for the Head Master in their absence.

The Provost offered kind words to the new Lower Master during the Morning Service on Sunday.

Prayers were then offered from the Eton College Conduct, Rvd Stephen Gray, to admit Paul to his position.

The Reverend explained: “The short ceremony is steeped in the spiritual remit of the School’s foundation based from our Founder.”

Paul Williams said: “I am sure that I shall long remember walking to the pulpit, through the two sections of the choir as they sang the Founder’s Prayer.”

Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Head (Pastoral) at Eton, overseeing the wellbeing of the boys.

He takes over the position from Su Wijeratna, who dedicated six years to the role before him and will be missed. She has now embarked on a new journey as the Head of Latymer Upper.

He acknowledged the previous incumbents of the job: “Having served under four Lower Masters, I know what I have to live up to and the service reminded me very clearly of what is expected of me.

“I feel a real responsibility but also great excitement as I take on this new role.”

He added: “Boys, colleagues and parents have been wonderfully supportive and positive and I do very much look forward to serving them as I take on this role.”

After the Installation, the new Lower Master’s family and friends were invited to a lunch hosted by Lord and Lady Waldegrave.
