From Friday 30 May to Sunday 1 June, 14 boys continued Eton’s tradition of participating in the European Championships of the History Bee and Bowl. This year, the tournament was held in Vienna, Austria.

Upon landing in Vienna on Friday, the boys headed straight to the host school, GRG 23, for the International Academic Bowl, a competition which tests teams across disciplines including history, geography, philosophy and more. Eton performed extremely well in this competition, with the Varsity (Year 12) team winning gold, and the top-performing Junior Varsity (Years 10-11) and Middle School (Year 9) teams winning silver and bronze respectively.

As in previous years, Eton also performed very well in the History Bowl, with the Varsity and Middle School teams finishing third in their divisions, and the Junior Varsity team gaining fourth place. Finally, Eton enjoyed considerable success in the individual tournaments. Special mention must go to Alexey A for winning gold in the Varsity Bee, Arthur G for winning the Varsity Science Bee, Yi FW for placing second in the Middle School Varsity Bee, and Philip K for winning the Open History Bee.

Apart from the various competitions, the boys also enjoyed time exploring Vienna. Highlights included sampling apple strudel and hot chocolate from the famous Café Central, visiting St Stephen’s Cathedral at night and tasting the famous Wiener schnitzel at different restaurants.

A massive thank you must be extended to Dr Yuravlivker and Mr Greenwood for organising this trip; both put in a great deal of effort to ensure that the visit was enjoyable for all involved. Although the academic season may be over for now, the teams look forward to the next year’s competition and continuing Eton’s run of success in this tournament!
