The Debating Society had a very successful day at the King’s College London Tournament. 10 boys participated, all putting in excellent performances.

Two of our pairs reached the grand final: Cary Godsal (JMG) & Trevor Chow KS and Jamie Bowden OS (RDO-C) & Fraser McConachie KS, alongside teams from Westminster, and Brampton Manor. The motion was “This House Believes That Education Should Not Be Designed To Promote National Pride”, with Fraser & Jamie giving the opening speeches for the proposition and Cary & Trevor giving the closing speeches for the opposition. Cary & Trevor were eventually declared winners.

In the individual speaker rankings, Trevor ranked first among 80 speakers. Cary ranked 3rd, Fraser 6th, and Jamie 10th. Fraser and Jamie were also respectively the top ranked novice speakers at the final.

Other teams also performed well, notably Sanjay Singh KS and Andrei Vishnevskiy KS, who came heartbreakingly close to the final, ranking sixth out of forty teams. Theo Harper and Johnny White, a novice pair both in E Block, managed to come 23rd overall.

Alex Trew (JRBS) and Harry Dunn (AMM) served as assistant judges, earning widespread praise from senior members of the adjudication team. Alex was awarded the right to help judge the novice final, with Harry being denied the open final due to the presence of four fellow Eton speakers.
