Every year, Eton pupils and staff deliver festive packages to elderly residents in our local community. Many have had a relationship with Eton for years, including former Dames, boys’ maids, grounds staff, and teachers. This year, each received a selection of wines and delicious Christmas cookies, kindly assembled by the catering team at Bekynton. In lieu of the annual community party, these packages brought the excitement of the season to people’s doors.

10 teams of pupils and staff collected the gift bags, distributing them to the local community here in Eton and Eton Wick, and the wider community in Windsor and Slough. While the weather was not on their side, the teams battled the elements to deliver the packages, taking the time to talk to people in the community and bring some Christmas cheer. Pupils told the Press Office of the delight of being able to make people happy at this time of the year. Haris A mentioned “it was fantastic to see the faces of the residents light up and their excitement to receive the packages, especially after the tough months of isolation caused by the pandemic.”

A couple of teams had even prepared some Christmas carols to sing door-to-door. Ivan A was one of the singers, who told us “they seemed to really enjoy the music and it definitely brightened their day on a cold wintry afternoon.

For me it was all about giving back at this time, to those who have given so much to our Eton community in the past

The volunteers made it back, soaked after the afternoon’s harsh rain and hail, and were greeted by warm cups of hot chocolate.

The Social Action team would like to thank all the those who helped to deliver the packages. Massive thanks also go to the catering team at Bekynton for producing and designing the tasty bags filled with delicious Christmas goodies.

To the whole Eton Community, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
