During Long Leave, nine senior boys were lucky enough to explore Venice on a geography field trip.

Over three days, boys explored the city and its lagoon, whilst learning about the challenges that Venice faces. From proposals to raise the city by several centimetres, to the MOSE Tidal Barrier Scheme, boys heard about the protection measures being proposed and enacted to prevent and alleviate the flooding which is affecting Venice at the moment.

The boys were extremely interested in learning about the regeneration projects that are taking place around the former ship-making area of Arsenale, where the ISMAR (Institute for Marine Sciences) are also based. The boys, along with students and teachers from the Liceo Franchetti and Liceo Marco Foscarini, went on a boat trip around the lagoon’s islands to observe one of the projects that is trying to restore the lagoon habitat by merging fresh and salt water in a ‘brackish’ zone.

Boys had a really valuable experience collaborating with Venetian students to produce educational resources raising awareness of Venice’s vulnerabilities.
