Highlights of this weekend’s34 school matches

This weekend was particularly busy for sport at Eton with major block fixtures against Highgate in football and Harrow at Rugby. All in all there were 34 school matches across all the year groups. The rugby club had a very large turn out for the Harrow fixture. Among many thrilling matches the XV, who were playing away, came from 15-0 down to win 17-15 with a penalty five minutes from time. The 2nd XV’s margin of victory was only one point more comfortable. Overall we Eton 14 out of 20 fixtures, but honours were equal in A team games where Eton won the Colts A as well as the XV and Harrow won the Junior Colts A and Yearlings A games. In lower teams we seemed to have the edge this season.

Overall this season the Junior Colts B,C and D teams all remain unbeaten, as do the Yearlings B and E, while the Senior 2nds and 4ths have only lost against Wellington so far.

This weekend in Football there was almost a clean sweep of wins over Highgate, the only teams to lose were the U15As who were narrowly beaten 3-2 at home and the U14Cs who went down 2-1. The Association and U16As both enjoyed 4-0 away wins and the U14As continued their impressive improvement with a 2-0 win. The 2nd XI won 4-1 and the unstoppable U16Bs chalked up a 9-2 victory.

Across the season the U16Bs and U15Cs remain unbeaten. The Association have only lost one game,- away at Brentwood – and currently head the Southern Independent Schools League table. They are also still in the ISFA Cup and face Bradfield away on Saturday in the last 16.

Such is the depth of football here, many of our lower school teams are relatively strong and have to play up a level or two, which is a valuable learning experience for the boys.
