Sir John gave a very personal talk, reflecting on his introduction to Spanish History and the progress of his career. He noted particularly the attraction of seventeenth-century Spain in austerity Britain in the years after the Second World War, but also commented on his interest in Catalan national history and his desire to try to produce a demythologised narrative of the region's past. He finished by acknowledging the difficulty for any historian of attempting to avoid bias, while explaining his fascination with what one can gleam from the simultaneous study of History and the History of Art.
