Following the recent publication of his biography on Burke, Jesse Norman spoke to the joint meeting of the History and Political societies, focusing on Burke’s ‘five great battles’. After beginning with Burke’s views on Ireland, Dr Norman moved on to his support for the American Revolution, his campaigns against the excesses of the crown, his fight to achieve better governance of the East India Company and Burke’s attack on the French Revolution. He finished with a glance at Burke’s thoughts and questions ranged from ‘Reflections on the Revolution in France’ to more modern issues such as Syria.
