History of Art Society Professor David Watkin on the English Country House

On Tuesday 18 October, Professor David Watkin addressed the society on the subject of the classical English country house, tracing its development from the Renaissnace to the present day. He showed how this great type of building blended the vision of the architect with the desire of the client to produce a flexible and beautiful result, which could be fit for a king (as at Wilton in the 17th century) or more a setting for wonderful parties (like Nashdom in the 20th century). His talk was illustrated with pictures from his new book, and at least one boy was able to thank him afterwards for the kind words he said about his own house!
