This week the Journalism Society held its inaugural meeting, welcoming Mr Gary Jones as the first speaker to address the society.

While some may know him as the man intimately involved in ‘Kippergate’, Mr Jones explained to the virtual audience that his job as editor of The Daily Express covered every aspect of journalism.

His personal experiences as a reporter, which include tales of running with Afghan warlords and buying a kilo of cocaine from drug dealers, have enabled him to understand the sometimes life-threatening situations journalists face to reveal the truth at the heart of a story. As editor of a national newspaper, Mr Jones emphasised the importance of making sure the newspaper produces the right sort of content, which entertains and informs.

As the webinar was conducted using a series of questions from the audience, Mr Jones also discussed the growing trend of fake news and misinformation online.

It was fascinating to hear from someone within the industry who has done it all, and could speak so captivatingly about journalism.
