On Thursday 9th January, the Keynes Society welcomed the long-awaited Robert Chote to speak on the UK's fiscal position (his Michaelmas talk having to be postponed due to Ed Balls' meddling in his department). As chairman of the OBR, Mr Chote is responsible for providing analysis and forecasting of the government's fiscal situation. His talk was a testament to the diversity of economics as a subject and was especially interesting in its illustration of the fundamentally political nature of the debate surrounding issues such as banking reform and austerity.
