In a brilliant talk, Professor Susskind spoke about the impact of technology on the legal industry and on society in general, arguing that the services sector, including the law, is becoming increasingly liberalised due to technology. He foresaw a massive reduction in the number of solicitors acting in their current role as they are likely to be replaced by less qualified and cheaper labour to whom large companies will outsource their legal requirements. Although he suggested that the Criminal Bar was unlikely to see a huge transformation, his message was clear: the legal industry is changing faster than ever before and it is vital to remain abreast of technological advancement to retain one’s footing amid this ongoing transformation.
