This week's talk was from Professor Jonathan Rhodes, an eminent gastroenterologist. His talk focused on cancer of the colon, and how, if at all, we can avoid it. The audience was fed fascinating statistics, and he introduced some of the diseases of the colon, such as Crohn's disease. He then discussed the "five-a-day" rule, and how there are some vegetables that were not classed as being on that list, despite their value in maintaining a healthy colon. The talk then turned to glycobiology, the study of the structure and function of complex sugars. For the end of his talk, Professor Rhodes reassured the audience that both coffee and chocolate were beneficial, even if only a little, for your colon. Another fascinating speaker at MedSoc.
