Modern Languages Society Lord Garel-Jones

We were very lucky to have Lord Garel-Jones MP to come and speak to us on bull-fighting (La Corrida), and whether it should be legalised in the UK. Lord Garel-Jones is in involved in various areas of South American politics and so brought a great deal of background knowledge to the topic. He concluded that the Western tendency to anthropomorphise animals and equate them on the same level as humans has resulted in an oversensitivity towards the use of animals. In his opinion, bull-fighting is not a sport, but an art form which uses bulls as its centrepiece. It was a stimulating and challenging talk which elicited several interesting questions, leading to a lively discussion. All in all, it was a highly successful meeting.
