Tributes paid to country landowner turned pop Svengali

TRIBUTES have been paid to an East Yorkshire country landowner who turned pop Svengali in the Swinging Sixties.

Colourful character John Chichester-Constable, owner of the Burton Constable estate, near Skirlaugh, has died, aged 84.

Born in 1927, Mr Chichester-Constable was the son of Raleigh Chichester-Constable, and his family have lived in the area for 700 years.

He attended Eton College, where he excelled at sport, before joining the Army at he end of the Second World War.

He worked in advertising, and even sold encyclopedias door-to-door in London, before returning to his family’s historic home.

Mr and Mrs Chichester- Constable had one daughter, Rodrica, whose son Jack is the heir to Burton Constable.

Mr Chichester-Constable died on December 7 and a funeral will be held at The Most Holy Sacrament, Marton, on Monday at 2pm.
