Salisbury Diplomatic Society Sir Ivor Roberts on the History of Diplomacy

The Salisbury Diplomatic Society welcomed Sir Ivor Roberts to Lower School to speak on the History of Diplomacy. The former Ambassador to Belgrade, Dublin and Rome is currently President of Trinity College, Oxford.

Sir Ivor charted the development of a discipline that has shaped relations between states for millenia, from the first envoys in ancient Greece to the redrawing of Europe’s political map at the Congress of Vienna, and Henry Kissinger’s use of shuttle diplomacy during the Cold War.

After a fascinating and insightful talk, Sir Ivor answered questions on a variety of topics including the ethics of diplomacy and its relevance in a globalised world.
