Banks Society Meeting: 'The Fight to Save Species from Extinction'

Thursday, 27th September 2012

Dr Lee Durrell, wife of the late Gerald Durrell (author of My Family and Other Animals and prominent zoologist), delivered a fascinating lecture on the subject of conservation. The talk was inspirational, focusing on the successful efforts of her husband, and more recently her and her team, to protect the world's biodiversity. She outlined the simple yet effective strategy of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust: protecting habitats, enriching and training communities throughout the globe and boosting numbers of all manner of threatened species. The talk ended with a poignant reminder of the tragedy and finality of a species becoming extinct. I believe everyone at the talk was moved and encouraged to conserve the fragile planet we inhabit.
