This week the Design and Engineering Society was pleased to welcome Mr Paul Stein, the CTO of Rolls-Royce.

Mr Stein gave an engaging and thorough talk about the history of aviation from the perspective of the engine manufacturer. He offered the audience an insight into the past, present and future of Rolls Royce and the stark changes which may be coming for the aviation industry. He explained that the future of long-haul aviation is not electric flight, instead it will be the use of renewable synthesised fuels similar to the kerosene currently used, but still used in a gas turbine jet engine.

The talk was peppered with the physics of jet engines, which although a complicated subject, was made accessible to all by the excellent and clear explanation from Mr Stein.

Everyone in the audience left with a clear understanding of Rolls-Royce and more importantly their future, and we thank him for both his patience and his passion!
