The weekend’s rugby and football

We had another strong day on the football field, winning 10 out of 14 matches against Ardingly. The A teams had a tougher time of things though this week – Ardingly is one of a batch of schools that offer sports scholarships in a serious way and it shows quite clearly in their top teams. The Association came back down to earth with a bump after their 10-0 win in the cup to be beaten 2-0 at home by a very strong Ardingly XI. The 14As and Bs who had both been unstoppable so far this season, also came a cropper. The U15s win age group of the week, winning 4 from 4, and the U16Cs can’t stop battering whoever they have in front of them! Special mention to the 4th XI as well who manned up against ACS Hillingdon’s 1st XI and came out 3-0 winners.

The XV recorded a superb 33-29 victory at Abingdon on Saturday, coming from behind through a one-on-one winger’s try from John Wylde 15 minutes from time then holding on through a nerve-racking injury delay (referee hamstring!). Particular mentions go to Max Carleton-Smith who defended stoutly at full-back and Archie Hammond who was a tower of strength in the front row. This is a particularly satisfying win as the B block age-group has never beaten Abingdon, a notably strong year-group. This was one of several very closely fought matches with the Colts A winning 12-10, Junior Colts A losing 34-15 after being 15-5 up at half-time and the Yearlings A drawing 12-12. The Seniors did well on a CCF weekend to get out 4 teams and still earn strong wins at 3rds and 4ths while our overall tally was won 13, drawn 1, lost 2.
