The Banks’ and Geographical societies welcomed Nixiwaka of the Yawanawá tribe from north-eastern Brazil to Eton. Nixiwaka works with Survival International, a charity set up to support tribal peoples’ rights around the world. He talked about his early life spent with his tribe. His father had visited America to try and gain support for Native people’s rights and, having found speaking through a translator limiting, encouraged Nixiwaka to learn English. Nixiwaka also spoke about the current situation regarding native peoples’ rights in Brazil and those of native people and their lands around the world.
