Visit by Ascot Heath CE Junior School

On Tuesday 11 December, the Eton College Collections welcomed sixty one children and eight staff from Ascot Heath Junior School for a morning of Tudor-themed activities. The children learnt about exploration in Tudor times in the Natural History Museum. Amongst other things, they also saw an early sixteenth century wall painting of a school scene, a carved inscription in College Hall recording the visit of Queen Elizabeth I in 1596 and her instruction that boys be given extra bread, and a cup from the silver collection dating to 1500. They looked at portraits by Hans Holbein the Younger, and the children were then able to produce their own class portraits to take back to school. It was a fun morning of exploration and discovery, Tudor-style.
