The Wellington Society met in a packed Marten Library to be addressed by Brigadier Doug Chalmers on a Commander’s perspective on war, a subject in which he has vast experience having been deployed on four tours of Afghanistan between 2008-12. Brig. Chalmers spoke on the development of warfare during the Afghanistan war but most notably on the importance of strong relationships with the many different facets of local rule and also that success in a hostile environment such as Afghanistan requires a commander to fully immerse themselves with the local way of life.
