The winning images from Eton’s Wildlife Photography Competition have been announced, marking the start of Environment Week at the School.
The boy-led Environmental Action Committee organised a series of events and workshops for the entire community to celebrate the awareness week. These initiatives included cyanotype workshops in the Drawing Schools which allowed attendees to create artworks using sun printing; a birdwatching talk and tour; and a week-long exhibition titled Maths in Nature in the STEM Centre.
The theme of this year’s competition was sound. The annual competition for boys and staff attracted many entries, with five images receiving commendations.
The overall winner was Cyrus P for his photograph of a lion. At first glance, the judging panel was convinced that the lion was roaring, but according to Cyrus, it’s yawning. Sound in a photograph can certainly be deceptive.
Alex W was highly commended for his photograph of a giraffe chewing, and recognised as the ‘Best Photograph of Wildlife’ in this year’s competition. The sound can be surprisingly loud!
The prize for the best photograph of the ‘Sound of Silence’ was awarded to Dr Soars. He took his photograph in the Drakensburg region of South Africa.
Arran S was commended for the ‘Most Emotional Photograph’ by the judging panel.
The prize for the ‘Best Contrast in Sound’ was awarded to Sebastian G for his photograph taken in Jamaica on a riverboat tour.
Well done to the winners, and thank you to all the participating boys and staff.
