In July, just after the World Cup final, 18 boys and 3 staff spent a week in Gothenburg for the 43rd annual Gothia Cup, the world's largest youth football tournament, featuring over 1700 teams from 78 different nations. Eton entered a team into the Boys 16 category and faced two Swedish league outfits and a team from Bangalore in the group stages. Finishing third, the Etonians progressed to the B finals (plate, as it were) and progressed through the knockout stages to the last 16, with a bye and victories over two further Swedish teams en route to being knocked out in the beautiful surroundings of the Slottskogsvallen Stadium. The whole Gothia experience proved again to be an inspirational, uplifting, global event celebrating the shared culture and excitement of football.
