On Sunday, an audience of over 200 boys had the privilege of hearing from Holocaust Survivor Zahava, Lady Kohn.
Born in 1935 and living in Holland in 1939, she miraculously escaped deportation to Auschwitz, but was sent to Belsen Concentration Camp with her parents in 1943.
A remarkable feature of her talk, given with her daughter Hephzibah, was that her baby brother, who had fair hair, was handed to the Resistance and put in an orphanage – he survived the war and ultimately became the Israeli Ambassador to Holland.
Vividly illustrated by a cache of remarkable documents, including the yellow star she had had to sew on her clothes as a child, Lady Kohn’s talk served as a moving reminder, at first hand, of the inhumanities of the Holocaust, and a powerful testimony of human resilience.
