Independent Plays are those produced without the umbrella of School or House funding. There may be between three and six in a normal year, offering a mixture of established plays and original writing. Although a Master is always in overall charge, he tends to be more of an enabler than a producer, and a boy is typically the director.
Technical support is given by the theatre staff and Stage Crew wherever possible, while help with directing, acting, and producing is always available — should it be wanted — from the Director of Drama. However the intention is to give boys as much responsibility as possible for all aspects of the production, including directing, designing, technical operation, fund raising, and publicity, in order to develop their creative and managerial skills to the full.
