The Eton College Debating Society had a highly successful day at the SOAS Schools’ Debating Competition, one of the largest in the country, with more than 85 teams participating over four rounds. We were represented by the following pairs: Coen Armstrong KS & Luis Wahl OS (JCAJ); James Quillen OS (NCWS) & Cary Godsal (JMG); Jamie Bowden OS (RDO-C) & Trevor Chow KS; Sanjay Singh KS & Andrei Vishnevskiy KS; Jonathan Yang KS & Daniil Filatov KS.
Coen Armstrong KS and Luis Wahl OS won all four qualification rounds, emerging first among 85 teams.
Coen and Luis then proceeded to win the grand final, which featured strong teams from St Paul’s, Westminster and DebateMate (a charity that provides high-level debate coaching for state schools). This is the second victory in a row for Coen, who also won the competition last year with Greg Weaving KS.
Coen also placed first among individual speakers at the competition, again repeating a feat he achieved last year.
Three other Etonians were ranked within the top ten speakers: Luis Wahl 2/170; Trevor Chow KS 6/170; and Sanjay Singh 8/170.
Jamie Bowden placed 2nd among 70 novice speakers at what was only his second debating competition.

Well done to the whole team on an excellent day’s debating.
